Sporting Goods Imports Drop 30% in Second Quarter


Broad-based declines in sneakers, apparel and hardgoods for the second consecutive quarter sent total imports down 29.7% in Q2 to $5,614.7 million from $7,981.7 million, as vendors and retailers slashed orders in the face of lower demand and bulging inventories. On the softgoods side, athletic footwear imports declined 35.8% to $1,447.7 million, and apparel dropped 32.8% to $828.1 million, while every equipment category except winter sports was also lower, sending aggregate hardgoods imports down 25.7% to $3,338.9 million.
