Retailers Plan To Open More, Larger Stores This Year
With just a few exceptions, sporting goods retailers are planning to grow or at least maintain their store fleets this year, despite short term headwinds from inflation, rising interest rates, and economic uncertainty. Last year’s ambitious expansion plans called for 289 net store openings by the retailers we track, but ultimately resulted in only about half that many new stores. In 2023, we see the retailers on our list intending to expand their footprint by 2.6% to 168.9 million sq. ft., with 72 net openings ending with 13,463 doors.
