Retailers’ Expansion Plans Accelerate In 2022
After a cautious exit from the pandemic that saw retail square footage grow by just 0.3% in 2021, with more stores closing than opening, 2022 is shaping up to be a year of relatively rapid expansion, as retailers are predicting the fastest growth since 2015. The optimism comes despite persistent supply chain pressures and increasing inflation that threatens to sap consumer confidence as it empties wallets at the gas pump and grocery store. We see the retailers on our list expanding by 2.4% to 165.8 million sq. ft., with 289 net openings ending with 13,534 doors.
