The outdoor co-op said it would exit its Experiences business, where it organized adventure travel, day tours, and classes, and lay off 180 full-time employees and 248 part-time guides. Those staffers who also worked in REI stores could have opportunities to continue in that capacity, however. In a message to employees shared on the company’s web site, CEO Eric Artz noted that Experiences has never made money, but it came closest to breaking even in 2019, before the pandemic hit.
