Global Sports Apparel Sales Gains Moderate in 2022
After 2021’s rebound of more than 30% from pandemic lows, branded athletic apparel sales grew a modest 5.2% last year to $121,294 million from $115,253 million, significantly underperforming sneaker sales, which increased 14.0%. The U.S. market turned in a mid-pack performance after 2021’s blowout, increasing just 6.4% to $53,053 million from $49,853 million. The strong U.S. dollar appreciated 12% against the Euro and 20% against the yen last year, and distorted results for companies that report in foreign currencies, pushing U.S. sales up and reducing their growth rate in dollars.
