Families Are Spending Less and Spending Later for Back-to-School


Back-to-School spending will fall to $557 per child from $570 last year, and parents plan to push purchases into Aug. or even Sep., according to the 2026 Deloitte Back-to-School Survey, which estimated total BTS spend at $30.4 billion this year. The survey polled 1,207 respondents, but was conducted in late May before promotional dates like Amazon’s Prime Day were announced. Overall sentiment was gloomy, with 57% of respondents expecting the economy to worsen in the year ahead, the highest tally since 2020.
