2025 Input Costs: Freight and Labor Up, Raw Materials Stable
U.S.-bound trans-Pacific shipping rates are again on the rise in the face of uncertainty over tariff plans from the incoming Trump administration and earlier fears of the potential International Longshoremen’s Association strike. The Jan. 9 update from Drewry’s World Container Index posted a 2% week-to-week increase to $3,986 per 40 ft. container, building on gains through Dec. and representing a 30% increase year-over-year. The figure stands 62% below the Sep. ‘21 supply chain crisis peak but 181% over 2019’s pre-pandemic average.
