Amazon Launches Counterfeit Crimes Unit

The e-commerce giant has formed an anti-counterfeiting unit from former federal prosecutors, experienced investigators, and data analysts, which will be tasked with scouring the site for knockoffs, and going after counterfeit sellers. Amazon said it spent over $500 million last year fighting fraud and abuse, including counterfeits, and blocked over 2.5 million sellers and removed over 6 billion suspected bad listings in 2019. The new unit will help the retailer to pursue civil litigation against suspected criminals, aid law enforcement officials, and conduct joint investigations with brands.
