World Cup Opening Brings the Usual Media Circus


With the expected news that Canada, the U.S. and Mexico will host the 2026 event, the 2018 World Cup kicked off in Russia with the usual hoopla from both the sporting press and labor activists. With Adidas sponsoring 12 of the 32 teams and Nike 10 more teams, the two sneaker giants will dominate the conversation on the pitch and are also the obvious targets of labor activists like the Clean Clothes Campaign, which released a report calling on sneaker companies to pay what it calls a fair wage.
