The physical presence of the sporting goods industry declined 9.3% in 2016 among major chains to 164,260,000 sq. ft. from 181,170,000 sq. ft. at the end of 2015, caused by the various bankruptcies and planned reductions by solvent retailers reacting to the evolving retail landscape. Sporting Goods/hobby/book/music store sales were down 4.7% in Mar. on an unadjusted basis to $7,034 million from $7,382 million, according to preliminary estimates from the Commerce Department.
