Debra Haaland Confirmed as Interior Secretary


President Biden’s pick to lead the Department of the Interior couldn’t be more different from her predecessor, receiving broad support from environmental and outdoor industry groups and now winning 51-40 confirmation by the Senate. The former U.S. Representative (D-NM) is a member of that state’s Laguna Pueblo, and is the first Native American cabinet secretary ever. Her strong environmentalist stance, which includes limiting fossil fuel development and particularly fracking on public lands, led to opposition by some Republicans.
