U.S. Dismisses Defense Arguments in Hoopgate


The U.S. attorney answered that Louisville University and the University of Miami were defrauded by the alleged payoff of high school athletes to attend their schools because the defendants knew that these payments would render them ineligible to compete under NCAA rules, thus depriving the schools of their scarce scholarship funds and exposing them to potential fines, penalties and ineligibility for lucrative tournaments. Moreover, defendants went to great lengths to conceal their conduct with false invoices, proving a conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
