New duties on solar panels and duties and quotas on washing machines were the first tangible salvo in the Trump Administration’s campaign promise to protect American industries since withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership right after his inauguration, and the Administration has hinted that it may seek higher duties on other products such as steel and aluminum that would specifically hurt China. China and South Korea immediately responded that they would file World Trade Organization complaints which, if they received favorable rulings, would enable China and South Korea to retaliate with duties on American imports.
