Trade War Rhetoric Ratchets Up Again
President Xi of China is asking his citizens to prepare for another Long March, referencing the beginning of the Red Army’s ultimate victory under Mao Zedong, as he builds up support for an extended trade war with the United States. His comments seemed to acknowledge that China, already facing an economic slowdown, is facing extended hardship from the impact of the tariffs the U.S. has already placed on China with the threat looming of tariffs on essentially everything imported from the Middle Kingdom. The Long March lasted 15 years and is the seminal patriotic event of the Chinese Communist Party.
