Strong gains in athletic footwear and apparel and increases in all equipment categories save exercise, sent total sporting goods imports up 11.0% in the second quarter to $7,989.9 million from $7,196.5 million. Athletic footwear imports grew 46.7% to $2,259.1 million, apparel grew 24.9% to $1,230.0 million, but the plunging fitness equipment tally sent hardgoods down 3.7% to $4,500.8 million, despite a big increase in team and winter sports, and solid gains in golf and outdoor.
