Schutt Investor Buys Vicis Assets to Revive Helmet Technology
Vicis was sold to Innovatus which entered the football helmet business last October with an $18 million investment in Schutt Sports after Schutt lost a $5 million patent infringement judgment in May to Riddell. Innovatus, a NY PE firm, paid $2.85 million for the assets and was the only bidder, according to Wired. It has formed a new company that promises to continue developing the Vicis technology that has made inroads against the established helmet companies with some top NFL and collegiate programs. Riddell has also threatened an infringement action against Vicis.
