Obituary: Jerry Turner


If anyone ever deserved the sobriquet of Shoe Dog, it was Jerry Turner who died Jul. 9 in his sleep at the age of 84. A workaholic who despised the idea of retirement and playing golf, Jerry devoted his entire adult life to the shoe business, starting with the family business of his first wife, Brooks Shoe. Jerry took the business into running shoes and for a time in the 1970s bedeviled Nike with high ratings from Runners World that were the subject of much scrutiny.
