Nike Runner Breaks Two Hours for Marathon Distance
Eliud Kipchoge completed the 26.2 miles on a closed loop in Vienna, Austria, in 1:59:40, the first sub-two-hour time for the marathon distance ever recorded. Nike-sponsored Kipchoge has won eight major marathons, but because this event was not run under marathon conditions, it will not be counted as a world record. Kipchoge also benefitted from a series of pacesetters who kept him at the pace needed to break two hours for the course, which was located in the city’s Prater Park and provided ideal flat conditions for the attempt.
