National Monument Creation and Protect Act Draws Industry Ire


The bill, H.R. 3990 introduced by Utah Congressman Rob Bishop, would drastically limit the President’s power to designate new national monuments using The Antiquities Act, adding size limits and additional steps to the approval process. The new bill refocuses the creation of monuments on “objects of antiquity,” rather than the much broader “historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures, and other objects of historic or scientific interest” prior criteria. It would limit the size of new monuments to 640 acres, with any larger designations requiring approval from the Department of Interior or Agriculture as well as by the state government. The ...
