Mike Ashley to Step Down from Sports Direct
The Sports Direct CEO is seeking to leave that position to run department store chain Debenhams, according to a statement on the company’s website. Chris Wootton, currently Sports Direct’s deputy CFO, would take the reins as acting chief executive in Ashley’s place. Sports Direct has been acquiring Debenhams shares since 2014 and currently holds about a 30% interest in the chain, which has been struggling in the U.K.’s difficult retail market.
