Michael Avenatti Indicted in Nike Extortion Attempt
Attorney Michael Avenatti, who was arrested two months ago for an extortion scheme in which he threatened to expose Nike’s purported involvement in NCAA recruiting violations, was formally indicted today in Manhattan Federal Court by U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman. The indictment lists four charges including extortion and several variations on conspiracy to extort related to a scheme to extort $1.5 million from Nike for his client, an AAU coach formerly supported by the company, and an additional $15-25 million in legal fees for himself.
