The arrest by IRS agents was apparently unrelated to the criminal charges the lawyer is facing for trying to extort millions of dollars from Nike. Avenatti was in Los Angeles on Jan. 14 for a hearing before the California State Bar when he was arrested for unspecified “potential violations of the conditions of pretrial release” on charges he embezzled from other clients, according to a letter from the NY U.S. Attorney.
