Kohl’s Has Soft Q1, but Active Still Going Strong
The active segment was a bright spot for the retailer in a disappointing first quarter, comping positively led by active apparel with a mid-single digit improvement driven by gains from Nike, Under Armour and “significant” growth from Adidas. Columbia was also mentioned as a strong performer in men’s apparel. Active comps were up overall in men’s, women’s and kids’. But lapping last year’s new product releases from Nike and Under Armour was a headwind to athletic footwear sales, which declined in the quarter. KSS said a fresher assortment from sneaker brands for Back-to-School would power a rebound.
