Katherine Tai Confirmation Hearings Have No Surprises
President Biden’s choice for U.S. Trade Representative gave no indication that she would be any more dovish on China trade than her reputation suggested, in her testimony before the Senate Finance Committee. She said that China needs to live up to its commitments under the Phase One trade deal, and that the current tariffs on Chinese imports are useful tools to incentivize its compliance. But in contrast to the previous administration’s policy-by-tweet approach, Tai pledged that the Biden Administration would develop a strategic and coherent plan for holding China accountable.
