Covid-19 Crushes Retail Traffic; Forces Store Closures
After a week in which sports leagues around the world moved to cancel events, championships and even entire seasons, over the weekend most major sporting goods companies announced temporary store and office closures to head off the coronavirus’ spread. Last week, when most retail was still open, overall mall traffic fell 17.6% and apparel traffic was off 26.6%, according to Citi research. The immediate future will be far worse for the industry, based on recent experience in China where Covid-19 ravaged the mainland.
