Columbia Sees Coronavirus Hit Sales and Profits


The Covid-19 pandemic impacted COLM’s results in the first quarter, as it eked out a $0.2 million profit, down from $74.2 million last year, on 13% lower revenues of $568.2 million against $654.6 million. The effects escalated through the quarter and were broad-based, sending wholesale channel sales down 10% to $325.9 million and direct-to-consumer down 17% to $242.3 million. Columbia suspended its formal guidance two weeks ago, but commented that it expects sales in the already seasonally small second quarter to be significantly weaker, and result in an operating loss.
