Closing Argument for Defense: The Coaches Knew; Competitors Do It Too


Michael Schachter, who represents former Adidas basketball exec Jim Gatto, made a one-hour summary to the jury Thursday in which he argued that Kansas Coach Bill Self and Louisville Coach Rick Pitino were fully aware of the payments Gatto was making to prospective players and encouraged them to do this. Schachter recounted testimony in which Kansas assistant coach Kurtis Townsend and Adidas consultant T.J. Gassnola discussed payments to KU sophomore Silvio De Sousa. He also noted that Gatto and Self had a five-minute phone conversation one day after De Sousa committed that was not wiretapped for “technical reasons.”
