China Trade: Contentious Week Ends With Some Optimism
White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said that the 10% tariffs on List 4 Chinese imports may not be imposed if Beijing indicates it’s willing to negotiate in good faith, in an interview on CNBC. Playing “good cop” to President Trump’s “bad cop,” Kudlow emphasized that the administration would much prefer a trade deal to additional tariffs. The two sides are scheduled to meet again after Sep. 1, the date when the new tariffs are set to be imposed, but the administration would consider calling off the threat if China shows goodwill by resuming purchases of American agriculture products.
