China Reiterates Demand that Tariffs End to Reach Phase One Deal
China immediately pushed back against the U.S. position that tariffs must stay in place as a condition of the Phase One trade deal with a Ministry of Commerce spokesperson saying that it is “an important condition of reaching a deal. The significance of the Phase One deal should reflect the scale of the tariff rollback.” President Trump has threatened to increase tariffs further in the event that no deal is reached, putting the two sides far apart again.
