Adidas Sees Three Stripes Setback in EU Ruling


The EU General Court in Luxembourg ruled against Adidas’ attempt to broaden its iconic trademark to cover “three parallel equidistant stripes of equal width applied to the product in whichever direction,” from the current registered mark for slanted stripes. The ruling upheld the European Intellectual Property Office’s 2016 decision to overturn Adidas’ registration of the expanded trademark, which had been initially approved in 2014 for apparel, footwear and headwear.
