Adidas Hoopgate Defendants Sentenced to Months in Prison
Former head of basketball marketing Jim Gatto was sentenced to nine months in prison and Merle Code and Christian Dawkins each received six months in New York court after their conviction last year on charges of defrauding a number of NCAA college programs for paying athletes to attend their schools, rendering them ineligible for play. Judge Lewis Kaplan said he sympathized with the defendants that they were being prosecuted for actions that were widespread in college basketball recruiting, but added that nonetheless they knew what they were doing was wrong.
